Sentencing Services
OUR MISSION
Our new mission is to provide the judicial system with information that will assist judges in
identifying the most effective community and correctional resources available for offenders.
OUR PRODUCT
Our plans provide the court with a detailed assessment of the offender and information about
available resources.
OUR CUSTOMER
Judges, defense attorneys, district attorneys, and the defendant may refer cases to our
program. While local program policies govern the procedure, all plans prepared are
submitted to the court.
MORE LOCAL PARTICIPATION
Each judicial district has a board comprised of local citizens and justice officials who
establish policies for operation. These policies tailor program operations to better
serve the judicial district. The Senior Resident Superior Court Judge is invited to
review the policies to maximize coordination with the district.
CANDIDATES FOR OUR SERVICES
Sentencing Services programs develop comprehensive, community-based sentencing plans for
eligible adult felony offenders. Judges may also refer any case including
misdemeanor cases falling in Class A1 and Class 1, prior record level III.
WORKING WITHIN THE CASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Sentencing Services recognizes that good services must be timely. For this reason,
Sentencing Services programs work with the District Attorney in order to coordinate our
services within the case management system. |
Pre-Trial Services
Executive Summary:
Pre-Trial Services Program of Orange and Chatham Counties
The Pre-Trial Services Program provides court sanctioned community supervision to
defendants in the pre-trial stage of the criminal justice process. The program focuses on
providing verified information to the judiciary.
The Pre-Trial Services program of Orange Chatham Alternative Sentencing continues to
provide a variety of services related to the county jail population in the 15-B Judicial
District. The program aims to quickly move data and prompt appropriate decision-making
officials to act expeditiously. These decisions effect the best use of the finite space
in the county jails.
Effective pre-trial release practices benefit the criminal justice system in a number of
ways. The information provided helps judicial officials to better decide who may be released
safely on their own recognizance pending adjudication. By providing release alternatives such
as supervised release, programs can expand the number of release options available to
the court. Pre-Trial Services represents a legitimate alternative to the present day
bonding system and is a primary outlet for jail-overcrowding. |
